Hi there,

It seems you are having trouble with error checking and clearing the bad sectors in your drive . You haven't specified which OS are you using currently.

Assuming that you are using the Windows 7 OS.

1. Go locate your drive.

2. Right click the drive and select properties.

3. In the box that appears select the tools tab.

4. Then select check now under the error checking category.

5. In the small new box that appears select all the options and then click start.

6. Wait until the process is completed.

Note :- Defragmenter cannot detect and clear the bad sectors. It's built for detecting fragmentation of the sectors or files and then Defragment it to improve the Read accuracy so the hard disk head doesn't need to search for the data since it will be continuously available.

If you want to check your hard disk for bad sectors, the simplest way is using the CHKDSK utility built-in to Microsoft Windows. To launch the utility, click “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories”, and then “Command Prompt”. In the command prompt window, type without quotes “chkdsk [drive letter]” then hit Enter. Replace “[drive letter]” with the drive you want to check like C or D.

For example: “chkdsk c:” or “chkdsk d:”. Don’t forget the colon symbol “:” after the letter of the drive. But if you are not satisfied with this utility program, you can try PC Tools Performance Toolkit. Follow the instructions to download and unpack and then install it.

To use PC Tools to check your drive for bad sectors, in PC Tools, go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives”. In “Repair Drive” screen, under “Select Drive Operation”, select “Surface Scan” then check “Perform on reboot”. Select the drive you want to check for bad sectors then click “Start” and then restart your computer.

PC Tools check drive for bad sectors

Selecting either “Check Drive” or “Repair Drive” will not check your drive for bad sectors. It will only check the file system, files, and folders for errors or inconsistencies. The “Surface Scan” option will perform all the functions offered by the first two options plus check the surface of the drive for bad sectors.
