My desktop that has an AMD Sempron processor, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD and running on Windows XP 64 bit has been running to a crawl lately.  Applications have been slow to load and I'm encountering frequent crashes.  Can someone suggest a "how to increase speed for computer blog" to guide me on what steps I should do?

Hello.

Slow loading times and frequent crashes can be caused by many different things.

First get a computer cleaning kit which should contain a can of compressed air. Open your PC case and blow out any dust in and around the CPU and fans. Do NOT use any liquids to clean inside your PC.

You CPU may have been damaged. This can be caused by overheating or power surges.

Your hard drive could be failing. Hard drives have an average lifespan of about 4 years but some do start to fail much earlier than that. Rather be safe and backup all your information. One of the tell tale signs is the problems you have described. Sometimes you will hear a clicking noise coming from the hard drive as well,

Viruses, Malware, Trojans etc can also cause slow speeds. It's best to run an antivirus program such as Avast and a malware removal tool as Malwarebytes. These kind of malware and viruses can damage your windows files.

Please see this tutorial on how to repair Windows files.

Hello Sharonfaviles,

There are a few reasons why your PC is running slow.

First you need to check if it is a hardware or software problem. Hardware problems that may cause your PC to work slow are mostly dust and overheating.

If it is a software problem then you should first run your antivirus to check if you have viruses, run registry cleaner utilities. If after this your pc is still running slow then backup your data, format your HDD and reinstall Windows.

Good Luck,

Moses
