Hi.  Why is it that I'm having a Lotus Notes bounce message of "mail could not be delivered" when I group email?  Works perfectly fine when I email with a single recipient.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Bounce back mails or delivery failure reports saying that your message cannot be delivered can happen due to several reasons. The reason is also usually stated on the same bounce back mail. See sample below:

The most common reasons are as follows though:

  • Incorrect email address, for example instead of entering [email protected], you may have accidentally missed a letter, and sent it to [email protected] in one of the members on the group email you’re trying to send it to.
  • If the distribution list or group email list name has changed. So say for example, I want to send an email to [email protected] however I didn’t know that they’ve already changed their email to [email protected], then I would also get a bounce back mail.
  • Another possible reason is that if the recipient group list has a limit on the email size that they can receive. So if you have sent a 50MB email when their limit for incoming emails is only at 20MB, you will get the same error as well.
  • If your email address has been blocked from sending to the group list.

Now, if you can include a copy of the error why your mail could not be delivered, that would help us to further isolate what is the exact cause.

Hello Douglas,

Since you are able to send to multiple recipients, you should be able to send to a single recipient because the concept is the same. Make sure that the address you are sending to is correctly spelt and that it is still in use. You can try to send to a different address and see if it goes through. Also try to check the settings because you might have set them to send only to grouped emails. However, the most likely explanation is that the address you are sending to is not correct. It occurs that the email is sent from the lotus notes but the problem is on the other side since it cannot be delivered. Use ordinary email sending such as Gmail to see whether you will get the same problem. If so, then the problem is on the recipient side.
