I'm trying to search for a certain file (it's an invoice) but have no luck searching for it. Can you share some tips or suggestions to help find a file in Windows Vista?

You may want to double check on the filename or key words you are using to search for the file. Make sure the word or phrase is not misspelled.

Look for it on the correct location. It's probable that you maybe using the correct search term but the file you are searching for is in a different location. Once a search is completed. Windows will provide you an option to expand your search to more locations by displaying links in the file list.

Better yet – try searching everywhere! Usually, your searches only include files that are indexed.

Go to Search by pressing Windows logo key Picture of Windows logo key + F. Click on Advanced Search. Click the Location list, and then click everywhere. If you want to search for hidden and system files, select the Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files check box.

Make sure that your search term is simplified. If your search term is shorter, chances are you'll get useful results.

For example, if you search for "April reports," you will find only files that include both of those words and not see any files that include just "April" or "invoices."

Does this file belong to another user?

If you can't search it on your own profile, your search results will only give you files that are on your index and by default, it only contains your own files. If the file belongs to another user, follow these instructions to change your searches so it will include files under another user:

Open the user's folder C:UsersUser, User is the computer username of the other person who has the file.

Hit on Search. Your search results should now include files from this user.

I guess that's why – the file I'm searching for was created by another user on the same computer and was saved on her profile.  The last instruction did the trick! Thanks everyone for the assistance.
