I am unable to set up outgoing mail in Apple Mail?

I'm sure it's probably a simple error on my part and so I humbly come to you guys for the answers. I've recently attempted to set up my son's MacBookPro. I'd like to have his email all ready to go before he leaves for school as a surprise. I keep running into the error, "The Server Rejects" message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would greatly appreciate it, if you could maybe go through the exact steps to set up the email on the MacBookPro so that it will sync with his iPhone (he set that up) and then later down the line perhaps an iPad.

Cannot send message using the server
The server "  " refused to allow a
connection on the default ports.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try
Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

Thanks in advance for your expertise and patience with me as I attempt to get this all sorted out.

Outgoing email, when it's not working on Mac Mail, then there's something wrong with the settings. Different Internet Service Providers use different settings for outgoing mail.

For Road Runner/Time Warner Cable, outgoing mail doesn't require username and password when sending.

To fix SMTP issue, click on Edit SMTP Server List, go to Advanced tab and set Authentication to None instead of password.

For Verizon Online, outgoing mail requires log-in when sending.

To fix SMTP issue, click on Edit SMTP Server List, go to Advanced tab and set Authentication to Password instead of None.

For other ISPs, call them and ask what settings should be set in SMTP.
