I have a Compaq that will not come out of sleep mode. Tried to get it load in safe mode but all I get is a blinking curser? What steps should I take to reboot or wake up this laptop? Should I try to boot it up from a flash drive?

Probably, the boot time operation of your OS is out of order. You can repair it by your original OS CD/ DVD or overwrite it with a fresh copy of windows. Booting from a flash drive can be a temporary solution. But the best is to format the drive and install a fresh copy.
