If your computer keeps freezing every time you check for updates, this indicates a problem with the operating system. It cannot be a problem with internet connection because a network related issue will not cause the machine to freeze.

Also, since the machine starts freezing at the point of checking for updates, it cannot be a problem with the Windows Update because there’s nothing getting installed and the file has not even been downloaded yet. Try running the SFC utility to check your operating system’s protected system files. Click “Start,” “All Programs,” “Accessories” then right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator.”

This will start an elevated command prompt. In the command prompt window, type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter. This checks Microsoft Windows protected system files and if there are unrecognizable files, they will be replaced with correct files. See if this fixes the problem.
