If you have forgotten your router’s username and password or if you have purchased a router that has already been used and don’t know the password then don’t worry, there is a way to reset them.

Steps are illustrated below:

Before resetting your router to its default settings, you should first try using the default username and password to log in. You’ll need these anyway if you plan on resetting the router to its factory default settings. There are several ways to find this information:

Read your router’s manual. Different models of routers – even ones from the same manufacturer – often have different username and password combinations. To locate the default username and password for the router, look in its manual. (If you’ve lost the manual, you can often find it by searching for your router’s model number and “manual” on Google. Or just search for your router’s model and “default password”.)

Example: D-link router has its username and password as “admin”.

If you don’t have any idea about username and password then you can reset your router to default settings

STEPS: To do this, press and hold the Reset button for 10 seconds.

NOTE:  Resetting your router to its default factory settings will also reset your router's password.  The router's default password is “admin” as for the username, just leave the field blank.

IMPORTANT:  Make sure that the Power LED of the router is blinking when you press the Reset button.  This indicates that the router is being reset properly.

By default, most Wi-Fi routers use the following login credentials to access the Control Panel:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: 1234

These are the factory login credentials when you buy a Wi-Fi router. But because everybody who has home Wi-Fi knows this, you have to change it so no one else can access your Wi-Fi network but you. In case you forgot your login credentials for your Wi-Fi router, there is always a way to reset it back to default.

You won’t be able to recover your lost password but you can restore the original login credentials so you can log in to the router. While the router is plugged in to the power and running as usual, look at the back of the device and find a tiny hole or button labeled “Reset”.

Using a small pin, push or press and hold the reset button for about ten (10) seconds then unplug the router from the power and plug it back in. After this, wait until the router is ready then log in to your router using your web browser. Use the default login credentials to log in or refer to your service provider for the correct default username and password.
