I can’t open any application from Microsoft. I am receiving an error like this:
Application.exe is not a valid Windows 32 application.
Booting from Safe Mode did not help. Why am I receiving this error and what do I need to do to fix this? I am using Windows XP and all the software and applications are up to date. Please help.
This may be caused by:
1. The file is corrupted or damaged.
Steps to resolve this:
a. Remove the application and then try to install it again. It is possible that the file gets corrupted or damaged while you were downloading it. If this doesn’t work, try to download the same file on different webpage.
b. If the file you were trying to access comes from a CD, ensure that the disk is clean.
c. Try to rename the file into a different file name and make sure it is still .exe file.
2. The file is not compatible with the version of your Windows.
Step to resolve this:
Verify that the file is compatible with the version of your Windows. Check for the minimum system requirements before installing the file. For example, if the file is designed for 32-bit version of Windows and you downloaded a file that is for 64-bit version of windows, you will most likely receive the error. Delete the file then find another that is compatible with 32-bit.
3. The file has a virus or Malware.
Step to resolve this:
Delete the file from Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs.
*If you already tried installing the application to your computer system, it is possible that your computer is already infected. Run your Antivirus software and scan for any threat. If you have found that your computer is infected, delete the virus then restart your computer.
4. There is an incompatibility issue with the hardware.
Step to resolve this:
Download the latest drivers for the application.

If you are initiating a program from a shortcut menu of the computer, you need to check that the program is still in the computer or not. You may get this type of errors in cases if you don't have the program being installed anymore in the PC.
If the hard drive is damaged then the programs may stop working for either all the data can’t be read from the hard disk or the program get damaged on the hard drive. You need to scan the disk, perform defragment and check for specific errors.
