Your idea of creating a registry file is correct. But I doubt it if the set of texts inside the supposed reg file of yours is correct. Here is an example of a reg file from Battle Realms:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLiquid Entertainment]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLiquid EntertainmentBattle Realms]

"InstallPath"="E:\XP Extension\Program Files\brealms\Battle_Realms_F.exe"

"Version"=dword:00000001

"WOTW"=hex:01 [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLiquid EntertainmentBattle RealmsVersion 1.0]

"Brightness"=dword:3fa66666

"Difficulty"=dword:00000001

"WOTWStoryEffectTotal"=dword:00000005

"WOTWStoryEffectCount"=dword:00000003

"Maturity"=dword:00000001

"ScrollSpeed"=dword:3f800000

"GameSpeed"=dword:00000004

Maybe the error in your reg file is the target registry address or whatever. Try checking every detail of your file. If the command arrangement is correct, then it will work. I don’t know how to compose sets of registry command. That’s why I gave you an example of an exact working reg file.

I think you need to follow these steps to solve your problem.

Form Start Menu then Run and write Regedit and then click ok and then click on File then Import to find that reg file (.reg) that you want to open and then click on it and after that click Open and see if it merges it into the registry and you can see this solution. Download the .reg file association fix from here

Hope these Solutions help you
