The icon, with the not so round red circle around it, on your computer will show you what networks there are.

When it is gray you are not connected to a network and when it is black you are connected.

To view Networks click on this icon at the top of your screen and it will show you a list of networks.

If you don't see anything tell it to refresh.

Mac Toolbar

If you still don't see anything you are either not near a usable network or your wifi card on your Mac is broken.

Good Luck!

If you have a mac and you want to use a Wi-Fi locator to find nearby Wi-Fi hotspots, try NetSpot. It supports OS X 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, and 10.14 Mojave. For Microsoft Windows, it supports Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10. It allows you to evaluate wireless LAN interference and determine which wireless channels are better for your access points.

Another scanner you can try is WiFi Scanner. It supports OS X 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks, 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, and 10.14 Mojave. For Microsoft Windows, it supports Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10. Among its features include Wi-Fi speed testing, detects unknown devices connected to your Wi-Fi network, display channel utilization, and more.

Next to try is iStumbler. It supports OS X 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, and 10.14 Mojave. Unfortunately, this is not a free application. You have to purchase it for $14.99.
