Hello fellow members.

I just installed a 1 TB Seagate HDD apart from my 500 GB HDD on my Windows Vista desktop.

How do I partition my HDD?

Can I also shrink the size of the partition I created in time?

How do I also merge my 2 HDD’s?

You can combine your 2 HDD's storage's into one spanned volume.

Here are the steps to get you started with spanned volumes.

One notable downside of it is that when one HDD in the volume fails, the whole volume is rendered unusable, meaning you can't easily retrieve data from its component HDD's, even the healthy ones.

For shrinking the size of the spanned volume, you can refer to these steps.

Hi Claraj Shipley,

The easiest way to do this is when you are installing Windows on your PC.

When asked you must choose how many partitions you want and how big the size of that partition should be.

If you do not want to reinstall your Windows you can do this with some programs without reinstalling.

But it can take a lot of time.

The best way is to copy all of your files because there is a possibility that you will lose all your data.

It seems the 1 TB Seagate hard drive is different physically from the other 500 GB hard drive so you really cannot merge these two hard drives since they are two different devices.

The other post is right, if you have two smaller hard drives you can combine them using spanning and this is available in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

But make sure to include the spanned drives in your backup tasks because if one of them crashes the whole volume is destroyed. So when doing spanning on your old hard drives make sure that both drives are healthy and in good working conditions.

There are different applications that will help you create partitions in your hard drive. You can use Norton Partition Magic or maybe PowerQuest Partition Magic.

These two software are designed to create and manage partitions of hard drives. Though I’m not sure if you can still find PowerQuest Partition Magic since Symantec already acquired the developer of this product, you can still try Norton Partition Magic. To download and visit. Partitioning my HDD was a pain for me but now, it is a passion! I had my old 500GB HDD and I installed a new 1TB HDD in my PC.

I became worried what to do then because the old one contained some important data and at the same time, the new one was in use.

I did not find any other way to recover back the old HDD’s data.

Here I got my solution from the comment made by Sharath Reddy.

His solution was so nice and the video too. Everything was great.

Using the spinning technique, I simply gathered the data I required. I am very grateful to you, Sharath.
