Recently my external hard drive (western digital 500GB) while in use through my HP laptop was attacked by a unknown virus rendering it completely useless. All data was converted to dot file and i was unable to recover any files. Can a virus be detected immediately?

Detecting this kind of virus needs a powerful unpacking engine that can decrypt the file before examining. But most of the popular antivirus doesn’t have it, which results to undetected virus. Â
