Hi there.  I have the new iMac with OSx Mountain Lion.  A notification popped up that said I need to update Adobe Flash so I clicked update.  After the update, I performed a security check using Norton Antivirus and it detected the Adobe Worm Virus.  I think the worm disguised itself as the Adobe update and Norton cannot delete it.  How do I delete Adobe Worm on Mac?

Run Norton and it should ask you for the deletion of the file. Else right-click the file and try to move it to trash, then secure empty the trash. If Norton is ineffective try free tools like sophos and clamxav anti virus for Macs

I think you are referring to Koobface. It is a multi-platform worm that at first target users of networking sites like Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, and Skype as well as webmail sites such as Google Mail, AOL Mail, and Yahoo Mail. It also includes MySpace, Bebo, hi5, Friendster, and Twitter among the affected sites.

But in the later versions it stopped using the sites because of enhanced security protection. This worm is designed to infect Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X but is also capable of infecting computers running on Linux. Koobface worm infection originally starts from a Facebook user whose computer is already infected by the worm.

His account will automatically send Facebook messages to all his friends in the friends list. When a user receives the message, it will direct him to another website that will prompt to download a supposed update for Adobe Flash Player. After downloading and installing the file, it will now begin infecting the new computer and the cycle continues.

So, if this is what happened to you, make sure to always update your antivirus and always scan any files you download before opening them. And next time, make sure to download Adobe Flash Player from its official website and not from other unknown website. Your best option now is just scan your computer with an updated antivirus and clean your entire hard drive.

Koobface has several variants listed below:

  • Worm:Win32/Koobface.gen!F
  • Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.a – this one attacks MySpace.
  • Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.b – this variant attacks Facebook.
  • WORM_KOOBFACE.DC – this attacks Twitter.
  • W32/Koobfa-Gen – this version attacks Facebook, hi5, MySpace, myYearbook, Bebo, Friendster, Badoo, Tagged, Netlog, and fubar.
  • W32.Koobface.D
  • OSX/Koobface.A – this is the Mac OS X version of Koobface that spreads via the social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.
