I am a newbie and I found viewing images in the photo gallery mac osx very different with my normal windows photo viewer. How can I change the way I view my images in this platform? Thanks

You problem is how to change the size of the picture gallery in your mac.
By change the size of the image no need to install 3rd party program just to resize. When you click the picture in Mac there will going to our an drop down list Click PREVIEW this can be use to change the size of the image. By this PREVIEW you can also edit here like adjust color or crop image.
To resize image in Mac OS X, follow the steps below:
Here are steps:
First go to the picture you want to resize double click
Second the PREVIEW will appear shows the picture you select
Third Go to the TOOL choose adjust size then IMAGE DEMENSIONS will appear then just enter numbers what size you want to happened.
Fourth once you change the size you must SAVE the “FILE” by clicking “SAVE AS” then don’t forget to put file name as new image or any you want to name it.
If you to overwrite the image just click FILE the SAVE or press COMMAND + S
TAKE NOTE: if you want to save in another file just click SAVE AS
If you want to overwrite just click SAVE
