Index.dat files come from accessing the Internet. They are saved automatically in the system but there are ways in which you can delete them. If you are using the latest versions of Windows like Win95, 98, or ME, you can delete it by using your MS DOS skills.

Restart your computer and go to the Boot Disk. You can start deleting .dat files from the MS DOS prompt. If you are using the latest versions of Windows, this won't work. But you can still delete the files by creating a temporary user with administrator rights.

Go to the CONTROL PANEL, choose USER ACCOUNTS, then CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. (Be sure to give the new account admin rights and a password) Log in to the new user and use the Search Tool to look for the .dat files. You can then delete them one-by-one or all at the same time.

Hi,

You can remove or delete the Index.dat files by just erasing or cleaning the index.dat files.  If you are using Windows 98, Windows 95 system, Windows Vista, XP, or Windows 7 , go to restart in DOS mode and try to look for the folder of the index.dat files, just delete one by one.

The Mil shield is a privacy protection program to clean and shred the index.dat files.  The Mil shield can track chosen sites which make browsing more comfortable or safe and also cleans all other tracks like the cookies, history, cache or User data that can be used by the folders and many more.

If you are not familiar with the file or folder and you think you don’t need it, check first which application that folder belongs to. It is possible that one of your programs is using that folder during operation. Though programs are installed on folders like “C:\Program Files” or “C:\Program Files (x86)” by default, they are not limited to using other folders.

They can create and use other folders outside their installation folder for processing. One example is “Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8”. By default, this program installs in “C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8” but it also creates other folders outside its installation folder like “C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0”, “C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\My Projects”, “C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\VSPTemplate”, and others. Check all applications you installed on your computer and verify their individual installation folder.

Try also scanning your computer for viruses. Update your antivirus then perform a full system scan.
