While trying to install Skype 4.2, Error 1638 occurred. Skype says there is a previous version of Skype, and I need to remove that. But there is no Skype installed in my computer. I installed it before, but deleted it since I rarely used it.

What can I do now?

My OS is Windows 7.

Installing Skype failed; code 1638

Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue.

This error is due to recently installed version of Skype on your computer that you do not permanently delete. The following are the possible causes of Error 1638:

  • Corrupt installation of Skype.
  • Windows are out of date.

In order to resolve this, please try the following steps below:

  • Click Start.
  • Type %AppData% on the search box.
  • When a window opens, find the folder labeled Skype.
  • Right-click it then delete (this will delete any version of Skype you previously installed).

Reinstall Skype:

  • Click Start, go to Control Panel then click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Locate Skype then click Remove to uninstall it.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download the Skype 5.3 here https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/
  • Reinstall it again.

Update Windows:

  • Click Start > All Programs > Windows Update.
  • On the left side bar, click Search for Latest Updates.
  • Download any available updates.

Hope this will resolve the problem.

It seems previous version of Skype was not uninstalled correctly. Some component is still there which is the reason for showing this error. Follow below steps:

• Go to Start
• Click on Control Panel
• Open Add/Remove Programs from there
• search “Skype”
• Select Skype and click Uninstall
• Uninstall shield wizard will appear
• Follow the on screen direction
• Restart your PC
• Try installing Skype again

This should fix the 1638 error arising due to corrupt files

I think I can solve this problem because I also faced this problem once. The problem is mainly because the server isn’t accepting a new Skype which you are trying to download as your computer already has one.  First thing I would suggest is that you should uninstall the earlier version of the Skype present in your computer. After uninstalling the previous version then try downloading the version 4.2 which you want from any trusted site available in the internet. I think after downloading and installing this version the error message won’t show anymore and you can enjoy the newer version of the Skype very easily.
