My laptop specs:

Model: Sony Vaio Y Series 2011

Operating System: Windows XP Professional(The original OS is Windows 7 Starter Edition but I decided to change it to Windows XP because it's for me its easier to use)

Processor: AMD Dual Core Processor E-350 1.60GHz

RAM: 2Gb DDR3 SDRAM

Hard Drive: 320Gb 5400 Rpm

Graphics Card: AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Graphics

When I open my laptop this morning, my computer froze so I shut it down manually. When it restarted this message appears :

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowsystem32c_437.nls
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set up using original set up CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I tried repairing it few times by using the disk but the message still shown up. A site tells me to run chkdsk on start menu, but I could not possibly do that because I cannot reach my desktop. Is there any other way to fix it? What are the EXPAND command? A site is explaining about typing it to a command prompt, but I don't know the step by step procedure on how to reach it. Anyone got any advice on this matter? Please help.

Hi there, a way to fix your issue is to replace  the missing c_437.nls manually. You can copy that file through Windows Recovery Console, here how you do it:

  1. Boot your Windows Installation Disc, Press 'R'
  • After pressing, a prompt should appear asking you to choose what installation of Windows XP to use.
  • Choose your installation and a Command Prompt should appear.
  • Type in copy c:I386C_437.NLS c:windowssystem32 and press Enter.
  • After, remove the disc and restart your computer.

You can also try check disc as you've said, in order to do that, just follow the steps above but instead type in chkdsk /r. Either way, this problem is caused by a missing or corrupt c_437.nls file and you must replace that file in order to repair it. Hope this works for you.

Hi,

The copy of the file missing from the Windows CD works only if you have the same service pack of your version installed.

Indeed, you just have tried to repairing but it doesn’t works.

You must recognize or remember what service pack you have on your PC.

Go on a working PC and follow the instructions at this site:

Once you have the correct CD you can try to replace your file or recover the system with the same version you have on your hard disk.
