Hello there,

I am having huge trouble running my PC. I can't run any program that has already been installed. New programs are refusing to install. Nothing is appearing on desktop. My computer isn't running without freezing. Also Internet connection is weak. Control Panel is not opening.

What do I do to fix it?

Hi,

The symptoms you have mentioned suggest that your Windows XP files have been heavily corrupted or damaged due to activities of Virus or other malicious programs. I think the best way to overcome these problems is to format your system partition and reinstall Windows XP.

Immediately after the OS installation, it’s recommended to set up a good virus guard in your system to avoid virus spreading from other partitions. Do a virus scan in other partitions. You are also recommended to update your OS and Antivirus guard frequently to defend your system from modern virus attacks.

If you are unable to reinstall a fresh copy of XP in the system try to do a Windows repair through Win XP CD and restore corrupted System files and other necessary files. Also install a registry repair tool like Registry Mechanic or Regcure to fix Windows registry errors.

The problem is more likely caused by virus infection. Update your antivirus then perform a full system scan. But I doubt it if this will work as your computer got infected even if you have an antivirus running. If your computer still keeps freezing, try scanning it with a virus removal tool like Sophos.

If a computer is infected with a virus, system performance is affected. You usually get longer boot time, longer application launch, high CPU usage though no program is running, and so on. Download Sophos Virus Removal Tool and install. Once installed, start Sophos then wait for the virus signature database to get updated. When updating is complete, click to start scanning your computer.

Sophos scans everything on your computer including devices connected via USB port. When a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus. Don’t disable your antivirus when using the tool. Sophos works alongside any antivirus program you may have.

Note: this is not an antivirus so don’t use it as replacement to your antivirus. It is just a tool to remove hard-to-detect viruses. It doesn’t have real-time protection like what antivirus programs provide. In case you receive different errors after cleaning your computer from virus infection, try using the System File Checker utility.

Press the Windows key then type without quotes “cmd” in the search field. Right-click “cmd.exe” in the search results then select “Run as administrator” to launch an elevated command prompt. In the command prompt window, type the following command then hit Enter:

sfc /scannow

Insert your Windows installation CD or DVD when you are prompted then continue. Wait until the process is complete. When it is finished, close the command prompt then restart the computer.
