I just upgraded to Windows 7 32-bit. I installed the latest driver (96.85) of my GeForce fx-5200 video card.

Upon reboot, screen becomes black then keeps on rebooting.

I'm thinking that my video card is not compatible with Windows 7.

Need help in fx 5200 win 7.

Hi Judith,

According to nVidia GeForce FX5200 is not compatible with Windows 7. The good thing is that there's seems to be a workaround for this problem. Please  follow this guide carefully.

Once you have uninstalled your GPU drivers, boot into Safe Mode and install GPU drivers through Device Manager in Manual mode.

You will have to locate your drivers manually, where you downloaded them.

If this method doesn't work, I suggest you to read here then.

Basically,it's drivers meant for 6, 7, 8 and 9 series of Nvidia GPU's, but as stated, it should work with your FX5200.

 Good luck to you.

I’m not sure if that version you installed is really compatible with your video card because the only version I found to be compatible with 32-bit Windows 7 for NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 is version 6.06 released on April 9, 2010. Since your screen turned black after installing the latest version then it only means there’s a problem with the update.

It may also indicate that the version you installed is not compatible with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video card. To fix the problem, download NVIDIA 6.06. It supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 both 32-bit and 64-bit. This NVIDIA driver package includes support for NVIDIA GTX 470 and NVIDIA GTX 480. This driver package includes the following enhancements:

  • Enables GeForce GPU overclocking
  • Enables GeForce GPU temperature monitoring
  • Enables system tuning and profiles for timings, clocks, voltages, and fans
  • Enables system monitoring for clocks, timings, fans, and voltages
  • Added support for ESA or Enthusiast System Architecture components
  • Allows you to display detailed system information
