Hello Rachel,

Try the following solutions:

  • Go to the Office folder (C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12) and double click on the SCANPST.exe file. Try to run the same file from the command line, both in normal and safe mode operation.
  • Run your Antivirus, Anti-Malware, SUPER AntiSpyWare, and Ad-Aware SE programs
  • Repair your Outlook with the built in Diagnostic Tool
  • Restart your Windows while Outlook was running.
  • Put your disk back in and run the "Repair Boot" option and "System Restore".

I hope it will help you solve your problem.

Running “SCANPST.EXE” as described in the previous post is one way of fixing it. But here’s another method aside from running “SCANPST.EXE”. Go to Process Explorer then download it. The download is a ZIP file so you probably need a file extractor like WinZip or 7-Zip to unpack the file. Once unpacked, run Process Explorer (“procexp.exe”) and select “Find Handle or DLL” from the “Find” menu.

Next, search for without quotes “.ost”. This should display all open handles to your Office Outlook data file. Select to close all handles to your “.ost” file and then start Office Outlook again. See if this works.
