I am a simple computer user and don’t have enough information about Windows usage.

I am using a PC running Windows XP with service pack 3. I recently purchased one more computer for the use of my children.

We are using a broadband service to access internet on both the systems.

The problem started arising after the purchase of the 2nd system. I am unable to use the internet on both systems at the same time. When both systems are on, one of them shows the following error.

duplicate name exist on the network

Windows – System Error

A duplicate name exists on the network.

I tried many workarounds by changing the ports on the modem, for both computer and updating of the operating system by using Windows update service, but the problem remains there.

Please suggest how I can use the internet on both computers, at the same time.

Thanks.

Hi KayJohn,

Your problem is not in the ports or in your network. This problem as it says, "duplicate name exist" means it is your computer name, try to change it.

Right click on my computer then click properties:

Then in the computer name tab, click the change button below

Then change your computer name

Click OK and then restart. I hope this will solve your problem.

Hi,

This problem occurs, when you are using the same computer name on your network area. Like for example, computer one used  " PC 1 " as a name and computer two also uses " PC 1" as  its computer name, and the two computer are on the same network. That is why this error appears.

Solutions on how to solve this problem

  • You can simply change the computer name on either of the two computer listed above.

    For example:

  •                  Computer 1 ————- PC 1                          Computer 1 ————— PC 2        Or
  •                  Computer 2 ————- PC 2                         Computer 2 —————- PC 1

Steps to follow on how to change the computer name

  • Go to start menu.
  • Right click My computer.
  • Left click properties.
  • Go to computer name tab then click change.
  • You can change your computer name at the computer name bar.
  • After changing the name click ok.
  • then reboot your computer.

I hope this solution helps you solve the problem. GOOD LUCK.

That error means two or more computers on the network have the same or identical names. Just like an IP address on a local area network, a computer’s name must also be unique within the network because it is used to identify the workstations on the network.

If two computers have the same name on the network, the system won’t be able to identify which workstation belongs to you and which belongs to your kids. Renaming a computer is very easy. To rename your computer, right-click “My Computer” and select “Properties”. In the System Properties window, go to “Computer Name” tab then click “Change” next to “To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change”.

In the Computer Name Changes screen, under “Computer name” field, enter a new name for your machine.

When you are finished, click “OK” and you’re done. You don’t need to rename the other computer.
