This error usually occurs due to hard drive failure. The hard drive should be avoided getting disturbed or experiencing voltage fluctuations. It could be a partial hard drive failure else you wouldn’t have been able to get access to windows or get boot options.

This indicates more of a faulty PSU or sloppy connection of data/power cable to the hard drive of your system.

Ensure the adequate power supply, also clean and tighten all the connections again. Run the diagnostic test again.

Hope your issue would be resolved. If not, contact Dell support for assistance.

In Dell computers, an error code of “2000-0142” indicates a failed hard drive self-test and the cause of the problem can be a cable or the connector. Turn off your CPU and open the CPU case. Check the cables connected to the hard drive. Disconnect and reconnect the ribbon cable and power supply cable to the hard drive then try the self-test again.

See if this works. If this doesn’t fix it, boot to Microsoft Windows and enter the following command in the command prompt and press Enter after the command:

  • chkdsk /r

According to a post in Dell community website, the user seen the command to work. Alternatively, try downloading PC Tools Performance Toolkit. Follow the instructions to download and unpack and then install it. Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives”. On the next screen, under “Select Drive Operation”, select “Surface Scan” and check “Perform on reboot”.

PC Tools Performance Toolkit perform surface scan

Select drive C and click “Start” then “Continue”. Restart your computer to begin the test. Perform a drive self-test again after the scan then see if it works.
