Hi George,

You don't need to download any defragment tools online. I highly recommend to use the built-in defrag tool in Windows which is called Disk Defragmenter. It has all the features to make you access files faster by rearranging them on your hard drive. It also helps your computer to read files much faster. Just go to the Start Menu, then All Programs, and then Accessories, then System Tools and look for Disk Defragmenter.

1. Select any drive you wish to defragment either Drive C or Drive D. Click Analyze Disk to initiate analyzing process which is a prerequisite before the defragmenting process.

2. After the analysis reached 100%, you can proceed by clicking Defragment Disk.

3. It is recommended to do this on a regular basis which is once a week or once a month.

I’m not sure if you still need to download a different application specifically designed for hard drive defragmentation. Microsoft Windows is already integrated with such tool and it is the Disk Defragmenter. In Windows XP, it can be accessed by clicking Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then finally Disk Defragmenter.

You can use it to analyze your hard drive to know if it already needs to be defragmented. Clicking on the Analyze button will give you the defragmentation report and it will also inform you if the selected drive needs to be defragmented or not. This is the screenshot of the Windows Disk Defragmenter that comes with your Microsoft Windows.

You may also try PC Tools Performance Toolkit. It is a disk utility program that comes with its own version of the disk defragmenter and offers other means of optimizing your system. This is the one I’m using because it is an all-in-one optimization tool that not only optimizes your hard drive by defragmenting it but also fine tunes the overall performance of the machine.

You can download it from PC Tools Performance Toolkit. Watch also the video “How to use Defraggler, make your PC faster with this Defragging tool | video by TechyV”.

If you wish to have other defragging tool aside from the Windows built-in defragmenter, you can try any of the following:

1. Piriform Defaggler – This is very simple to use and allows you to defrag every files and folders on your computer. So, if your computer has a huge Steam Library, you can use this tool to scan and defrag them even though Steam has its own defragging way. You can schedule to run this tool on daily, weekly or monthly basis. However, the downside of this is that, it will take 90 minutes to defrag your system.

2. Disk Defrag – Aside from defragging your system, this tool will also fix the bits on your PC to free up some space on your hard drive. It can also move the system files to a fastest location on your HD to put everything on the right path. If you have more than one drive, you can set this to run on all drives. It can defrag your computer for 38 minutes.

3. Smart Defrag 3 – This is very fast and secured Defragmenter. This is based on IObit' Boot Time Disk Defrag technology. It will clean up your junk files and make your system runs faster. This supports Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
