DDR Ram and DDR1 Ram
The differences between the DDR Ram and the DDR1 depends on the generation of which the computer was manufactured. The older DDR Ram may also be notched in different style. This always comes depending on different time of manufacturing. The speed and the size also differ differently between the type of Ram that should be installed.
DDR Ram and DDR1 Ram
Hi,
DDR ram and DDR1 ram are the same.
The DDR SDRAM which stands for Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory is also known as the DDR1 SDRAM, which has now been superseded by DDR2 and DDR3 SDRAMs.
DDR SDRAM enables high transfer rates by strictly controlling electrical data and clock signals. This interface also uses double pumping which means transferring data on both the rising and the falling edges of clock signal. The name double data rate refers to the fact that such clock frequency achieves twice the bandwidth compared to Single Data Rate (SDR) using the same frequency.
Hope this helps.

DDR Ram and DDR1 Ram
Are you certain your son never purchased a DDR2? If that is the case then be sure it will not fit in the DDR1/DDR slot. Also what was the speed and capacity of the DDR1 you previously had? This is because a computer has a limit on the capacity it can handle in each slot so if you put a size it can’t handle in that slot e.g. your computer can only handle 1GB of memory per slot and you replace it with a 2GB on that same slot, then your computer is most likely going to be unable to boot.
NOTE: DDR1/DDR slot is the same.
The slot is able to handle up to 1GB that is what Crucial says. So if he got a memory stick with more than 1GB, it will not work. Crucial have the best memory sticks, they will also refund you if the memory sticks fail to work
