I think cloud computing is the delivery of computing and storage capacity as a service to a community of end-recipients. The name comes from the use of a cloud-shaped symbol as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams. Cloud computing entrusts services with a user's data, software and computation over a network.

If I'm not Mistaken, Cloud computing is an internet-based computing. It is also describes a supplement and delivery model for IT services based on the internet. Typically, It involves over-the-internet provision of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources. And as far as I know, the word or the term "cloud" is used as a metaphor for the internet, based on the cloud drawing used in the past to represent the telephone network. It is also often appears as a single point of access for consumers computing needs.

Hi there,

Not to complicate things, the cloud is the Internet. Gmail is cloud, so is yahoomail. And even other applications like salesforce.com, outlook, etc. Everything based on the internet are cloud solutions.

On a broader perspective, when we say cloud computing, we take traditional services like hardware, software, platform and even applications as services. These will be hosted over the Internet.

Compared to traditional means, individuals or businesses can now have the luxury of not shedding out huge investments for hardware and software. What they can do is ‘rent’ these services from service providers and they will only be billed for what they consume. This makes it more cost-efficient.
