nlnotes.exe is part of Lotus Notes 8 client but is not the main executable of the application. Lotus Notes 8 is normally started by opening notes.exe. It loads the Eclipse-based version of Lotus Notes if “-sa” switch is not applied. But if you want a much lighter version of Lotus Notes, opening nlnotes.exe instead of notes.exe will help you especially if you have less than 2 GB RAM.

You can use in-line spell check when nlnotes.exe is used but the features that are designed for Eclipse-based Lotus Notes and new templates will not be available. Both notes.exe and nlnotes.exe are located on the Lotus Notes installation folder. If you happen to get the “assert in lsp” error when using nlnotes.exe, try reinstalling Lotus Notes and see if it works.
