Adobe Premiere shown error when tried to import an AVI file

Hello,

Sometimes I get this annoying error message when importing an AVI file. The error says ‘Unable to open that file’. Is this problem with Adobe Premiere or anything else?Would you mind to help me. Any kind of assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Unable to open that file.

File uses an unsupported compression format.

Hi Larry, 

There are two ways in which you can solve this issue. 

1. Try to change the extension from .avi to .mpg before importing. This will make the program use a more tolerant importer. 

2. Use Windows Media Player or Apple Quicktime Pro to transcode the file into .mov or .wmv format. This will allow the file to be imported, but may lead to loss of picture quality.
