Hi experts,

When I opened the calc.exe the following error message appeared. I changed the settings but the same error displayed. How can I change the settings properly so that it may allow this format? I really need your suggestion to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Adobe Acrobat

Acrobat cannot open the file attachment because your pdf file attachment setting does not allow this file type to be opened.

Hello Lee,

This error comes up because of Adobe Reader's security settings which prevent opening file attachments with file extensions like .exe by default.

If you really need to be able to open an exe or any other file format that is by default not allowed, then you will have to edit the Windows Registry.

Given below are the steps, however please be very careful while editing the registry –

  1. Click "Start -> Run" the type RegEdit and press Enter. This open the registry.
  2. Navigate to – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesAdobeAdobe Acrobat{VERSION}FeatureLockDowncDefaultLaunchAttachmentPerms

    1. where VERSION is the version of Adobe Reader installed in your machine.
  3. On the right window there would be a registry entry titled tBuiltInPermList. Double-Click on it to open it.
  4. A window will open with a field called Value Data which consists of a list of pipe separated values. The values are colon separated themselves.
  5. Here security permission is a numeric value, where –

    1. 3 = never allowed
    2. 2 = always allowed
    3. 1 = user prompted
    4. 0 = a different, more restrictive user prompt
  6. If your extension is in the list then you simply need to update the security permission, otherwise you may have to add the file format and the permission to the list.
  7. Save your changes, close RedEdit.
  8. Restart Adobe reader and try to open the attachment.
  9. Please see the screen shot below Save your changes close RedEdit

Hope following these steps helps you.
