This issue on 3DMark06 is kind of complicated because Futuremark staffs on their community website were unable to fix the issue until a 3DMark06 user posted a solution which finally fixed the problem. This issue was encountered on 64-bit Microsoft Windows. There should be no problem when installing it on 32-bit Microsoft Windows.

This happens because when you start 3DMark06, it will look for the 32-bit OpenAL32.dll file by default. When you install 3DMark06 on 64-bit Microsoft Windows, you get the 64-bit version of the OpenAL32.dll file. So, when you start 3DMark06 on 64-bit Microsoft Windows it will open the 64-bit version of the DLL file which is incorrect since it expects the 32-bit version and that triggers the error.

To fix this, head down to the OpenAL website and download OpenAL 1.1 Windows Installer (ZIP). Once downloaded, unpack it. Right-click on the installer and select Properties. Select Compatibility tab. Under “Compatibility mode”, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for”. From the dropdown list, select Windows XP Service Pack 2 and then click OK. Double-click the installer to launch it.

Note: this will replace the OpenAL32.dll file with the 32-bit version on your Windows folder. Next, go to “C:WINDOWSsystem32” and copy the OpenAL32.dll file to the 3DMark06 installation folder. Next, disable the compatibility mode on the installer by unchecking “Run this program in compatibility mode for” on the file’s Properties. Once the compatibility mode has been disabled, run the installer again to reinstall the 64-bit version. And that’s it.

3DMark06 now works on 64-bit Microsoft Windows.
