I am using Western Digital external hard drive size is 1TB. The light shows on, but when I connect to laptop, the drive is not recognized. Device manager is not showing any drive. I am using Xp with sp3. I tried downloading a driver from WD, but it will not be installed. I tried that several more times but get the same result. I changed the USB cable also. Please help.

Thank You

First solution to try:

Disconnect your Hard Drive from the computer and turn it off.  Disconnect any other USB devices (Besides your mouse and keyboard) from your computer if any is connected. Follow the steps below to make your device seen in Device Manager.

  1. Click on the following in this order: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
  2. In the Command Prompt, type

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

  1. Press Enter
  2. In the Command Prompt again, type the following

start devmgmt.msc

  1. Press Enter
  2. In Device Manager, troubleshoot Devices and Drivers.  NOTE: you must click on View > Show Hidden Devices
  3. When the troubleshooter has finished, close the Device Manager
  4. In the Command Prompt, type Exit.
  5. Click here to have this fixed for you automatically and when the dialog opens, click Run.

After you have followed the steps above, download the Western Digital USB driver.  Plug in the Hard Drives power supply into the wall socket and connect the USB cable to the computer.  If you go to Device Manager, your Hard Drive should show up now.

Second Solution to try:

You can run and application from Microsoft called Tweak UI. It enhances user’s Windows XP interface, but it can help you fix your hard drive issues as well.  You can download the program from here.
