Comments on the Google Chrome OS Notebook
The Google Cr-48 Chrome OS notebook may be the start of something big, but it’s not that good-looking, has only one USB port and has a rather strange keyboard, and has a browser-based interface. With that, let’s take a good look at what I like and don’t like about the Chrome Notebook and OS.
Like: Simplicity
One of the good things about the Cr-48 Notebook is that it is very simple and does not need any setting up. The OS starts quickly and setting up your account is very simple.
Like: Keyboard
The keyboard is nice and clean along with very solid keys. Keys like Forward, Refresh etc. come handy while browsing.
Dislike: Keyboard
The placement of the Caps Lock button is rather inconvenient and there is no keyboard lighting of any sort. The Power button introduced in place of Delete key doesn’t offer any comfort to the user.
Like: Free Broadband
Google and Verizon provide the Notebook with 100MB of free broadband for two years.
Dislike: 100 MB?
100MB of data gets used up pretty fast and could get pretty expensive. The 100MB monthly stipend for broadband is a bit inconvenient.
Like: Chrome Cloud Printing
This feature is very impressive. It is very ease to print something from your PC at home even when you are working in the office with the help of the Google Chrome 9 beta.
Dislike: Chrome Cloud Printing
On the downside, the interface doesn’t agree with this feature very well. Once printing is started, not much can be done because the process takes over the system.
Dislike: Track Pad
The track pad works very inconsistently. It is also a huge button, but is rather hard to press.
Dislike: Keyboard Combos
The keyboard combos are very different as compared to usual computer keyboards. Alt-Tab can’t switch between tabs and the Escape is of very little use.
Like: Web Apps
Enhanced browser extensions with added functionalities are really convenient.
Dislike: Chrome’s Web Apps
Not all the apps really work. The installation may go well, but the app doesn’t work.
Like: Clean Lines
Everything on the laptop is well-placed and rather nice to look at.
Dislike: The Port
The SD-Card slot never works and there is no Ethernet port.
Like: Very Fast
It is faster as compared to other PCs and gets out of Sleep very fast.
Like: Battery Life
It has a battery life of about seven hours.
Like: Being Signed In
You don’t need to sign in to access Google services.
Like: Omnipotence
You can sign in and sign out of any Google PC and everything, as in everything it is still the same. This is very unique and convenient.
Like: The Cloud
Ready-to-use data from any PC is awesome and you can access critical data anywhere.
Dislike: The Cloud
The Cloud is a rebranded internet and although very convenient, it still has many flaws. Apps tend to freeze a lot.
