I have recently learnt xml. Therefore, I am new in this regard. Presently for susceptibility reporting I am going to make use of the new CVRF xml documents. Presently for publishing susceptibility reporting I cannot help doing a good number of copies as well as pasting. I do this for my IT personnel when scraps come out. To me, cvrf format is likely to be the ticket in the cases of reducing that very tedious copy and pasting work. I think I can import the xml files from Microsoft, Oracle and Red Hat and then I can put them into a previously defined template so that I can get rid of burden of lots of boring cutting and pasting. Now What I Need are helps with: Presently I am unable get past step 1 i. e. importing the xsd file. Therefore after opening a new Excel workbook I select "Source" from the options in the XML. At this point the following message appears, "This workbook does not contain any XML Map…." Then I click "xml maps", "add" and move to my desired xsd file. After that I select it and see the following error message: XML error has occurred

XML Error An XML error has occurred. Please correct the problem and try again. Click the Details button for a more specific description of the problem. OK Details <<< Details Description : Schema4# /schema/attribute[1][@name = 'lang'] Duplicate named <attribute> : name = '{http://www/w3.org/XML/1998/namespace}lang'. Or sometimes I see the following error message. The error message depends on which xml file I am opening. Error code 1072896664

XML Error An XML error has occurred. Please correct the problem and try again. Click the Details button for a more specific description of the problem. OK Details <<< Details Error Code : -1072896664 URL : https://csrc.nist.gov/schema/cpe/2.2/cpe-language_2.2a.xsd Reason : The namespace prefix is not allowed to start with the reserved string 'xml'. Line : 4 Column : 7 File Offset : 157 I think the question that I asked first is that is my concept of using Excel to create the above type reports even do-able? And if it is the so, How can I get an xsd file into Excel? I have already told that I am a new user of xml. Therefore I am requesting for some thorough steps to figure it out. Please help ASAP.

Hello Brandycarrie,

The error you have faced is due to the fact that an invalid character was found within the content.

Please follow these simple steps given below to resolve your issue.

  • First you need to load the Excel file in a text editor of your choice, say Notepad or Notepad++.
  • Next you have to for this segment : encoding="utf-8" which you will find very close to the start of the file.
  • Now change the utf-8 part to windows-1252 thus making the previous segment as encoding = "windows-1252".

This should allow you to load the file in Excel.
