My PC gives me an ‘mbr missing’ error. I do not think that I have done much on it to get this error, but here is how it started. I installed another HDD and then created another spanned volume on it using computer management settings. Now the machine cannot start and not even safe mode is accessible. What should I do?

In Windows Vista, you need to boot up in the Recovery Environment and then run the bootrec command in the command prompt.

  1. Insert the Windows Vista disc into your drive and press any key to boot up from the disc.
  2. Choose Language, Time, etc. and click “Next”
  3. Click on “Repair your Computer”
  1. After choosing the Operating System to repair, click the “Next” button.
  2. A dialog box showing “System Recovery Option” will come up, and choose “Command Prompt”
  1. In the command prompt, type bootrec.exe and push “Enter”
  2. This will fix the error
