My laptop with Windows ME doesn't recognize my external HDD and it will only read SD cards from my USB card reader and not directly from SDHC cards. Is this normal or is there a way to fix this issue?

It may because the external hard drive is too large and/or it's format is not compatible withe windows ME. What you can do is do a FAT32 Format on the external harddrive. The easiest way to do it is by using DOS.
Click the start button on your computer and then click run, press enter. On the RUN pop up box, type in "cmd" and then click OK. You will then see the DOS screen, type "format/FS:FAT32 X" (replace X withe the letter of your hard drive) and then press enter. Windows will then start formatting your hard drive. Once done, your hard drive will then be recognized by the OS. Now for the card reader, just install the driver that came withe it and it will work too.
