Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800705b4

Hello! There,

I have been having this problem since last week. I’ve tried to resolve it myself, but obviously failed to do so.

So I am consulting the help of those masters online and I hope someone will help me with this.

My Windows Defender seems to be having a problem. I cannot open it. If I do, this error (refer to the image) pops up on my screen. I am also using Norton as my Antivirus program. I remember the first time this error showed up, I was updating Windows.

So please, I could use some little help right now.

Windows Defender encountered and error: 0x800705b4. This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Thanks.

Hi! There,

First of all, if you have any third party Antivirus software and/or firewall installed in your PC, disable them temporarily and make sure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.

Then check if the issue comes up again. Make sure you have just one Antivirus/firewall installed.

Having multiple software to monitor the same issue of your PC might be the reason.

If the issue comes up again, to solve your problem, you can follow the steps the below:

  1. Open Run from your start menu, and type in services.msc then hit Enter.
  2. In services window, locate Windows Defender service from the list.
  3. Check if that the Status is Started. If the Status column is blank, right click on the service and select Start.
  4. If you get an error trying to force start the Windows Defender service, try to change the Startup Type to Automatic, and then restart the computer.

Hope this will solve your problem

Cheers
