Glad to have your question. The problem you’re facing with the Windows Update is really a painful issue. I have faced the same problem with my computer too. Well the Windows Update is a service and the process has to be running. You can find it under the task manager. This problem occurs when windows tries to get update and fails. Since windows need updates for regular use.

I have seen that the problem may occur due to the Ethernet connection problem.

  • It could happen due to the removal of the Ethernet device from the device manager by your ICS Host.
  • This can also cause due to bad IP or Dropped Packet communication problem. Check out your IP connection or host for more help.

If you are using windows vista on a domain you may find the same type of problem. Since I’m not use which operating system you’re using.

  • Vista adds a registry key in the process of adding to a domain.
  • The process to remove this is to-
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindows Update.
  • A sub key may appear called “AU” Remove that too.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Hope it will start again.

The “Slsvc.exe or service.exe” must be put into “Run” before starting the update. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Click Start Menu > Form that in the search box type (Services or services.msc).
  • From the search results Click on Services.
  • Double-click on the service Software Licensing.
  • Set Startup type to Automatic.
  • Click Start to start the service.
  • Now you need to exit the Software Licensing, Properties window.
  • Close the Services window.
  • Now install the update, it may work.

The anti-virus application or software installed in your computer may cause such problem.  Try to uninstall it and look for update. Or you can purchase a license version of Antivirus software. That may solve the problem too.

Hi,

Before doing anything in your computer do this simple test to resolve the problem.

Check the Internet connection, check the network cable first, replace if needed. After checking the network cable, make a ping in cmd prompt, click start menu > click run > on the dialog box type cmd, in cmd prompt type ping yahoo.com –t, if there is no time out displaying then your network is good.

Disable any Antivirus that or any firewall program, the firewall filters all the information that comes through the Internet connection into your computer system. It might have a possibility that it’s blocking the updates for your computer.

Add the Microsoft update web site and Windows Update web site to the trusted sites list, to do this, open the IE explorer >click the Tools > Internet option > click the security tab > in the security settings click the trusted sites > and then click the sites button > just type the said web site here and click add, after you add the two web site click ok to close the dialog box > click apply  and then OK  to close the Internet option > close your IE.

Now try to update again the Windows 2008 server.

Hope this help.

According to this URL from microsoft.com, the cause for the error that is shown in your screenshot is caused by a virus.

The virus has probably disabled several services or processes that Windows update needs to function properly.

To remedy the problem without reinstalling Windows, you will have to find a suitable antivirus to scan and fix the damage cause by the virus.

It is useless to install an antivirus since your Windows installation has already been compromised.  I therefore suggest you remove your hard disk and connect it as a slave drive on another computer that is protected with an antivirus.  Use that computer to scan for viruses and fix your hard drive.  Use a reputable antivirus such as NOD32 or Kaspersky.

Once the virus has been removed, reconnect your hard drive and bootup your computer.
