Hello Jamesstefen,

Compare and choose the one that suits you the best.

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) :

Being an International standard, it is better suited for international roaming if you have quad band (850/900/1800/1900 MHZ) cell phone. GSM offers Edge, allowing maximum download speed of 384 kbps.  Your account information along with your contact list and other personal data are stored on a SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module).  When you get a new mobile device, you can simply insert your SIM card into it and it will work with your current account information and contact list.

CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access):

CDMA generally offers a better coverage than GSM in some rural areas because it was deployed earlier. Its network reaches over 270 million users worldwide. The best data transfer technology it has to offer is, the EVDO technology, allowing for a maximum download speed of about 2 mbps (about 700 kbps in practice).

Your account information is programmed into your cellular phone. If you want to change your phone, you have to contact your carrier and have them reprogram your new phone. You will also need to re-enter your contact list and calendar information into your new phone.

Regards,

Iqbal

Code Division Multiple Access and Global system for Mobile Communication, both technologies have Pros and Cons. GSM can be the best service for both mobile communication and wireless service. CDMA has increased communications security, increased efficiency, means we can serve more number of customers, smaller in size and utilizes low power and extended reach to rural users.

Of course, the disadvantages are CDMA are, it is new and network in not as mature as GSM. It is restricted geographically, cannot offer international roaming. Finally due to its proprietary nature its defects are not open. GSM allows international roaming ; more stable network ; SIM – Subscriber Identity Modules – smart cards, which provide secure data encryption for M-commerce advantages ; easily up-gradable to 3G.

GSM is a clear favorite for AT&T wireless service and it's having 450 million subscribers. GSM still holds an upper hand for wireless internet facilities.
