There are plenty of anti-virus programs out in the market. Some need to be paid for and some are free. What anti-virus program is most recommended for desktops?

Preferably one that will not slow down my computer when scanning for viruses.

Hello Garrick,

If you want a free antivirus, then AVG Antivirus is amongst the best free Antivirus Softwares which will not slow down your computer’s performance while scanning for viruses and removing them. However, If you are willing to buy an antivirus, then you can go for Norton Internet Security 2012 or Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus Plus 2012. You can download any one of these from http://download.cnet.com/windows/internet-security-software-suites/. Once your trial is finished , then you will have to purchase the antivirus  which you have downloaded.

Other ways of increasing your PC’s speed is to increase your GB or you can download softwares like PC Speed Booster or Speed up PC 3X faster. Also, make sure that you delete your cache, browsing history and temporary internet files. This will also help to speed up your PC while your antivirus scans for viruses.

One reason why antivirus programs make your computer run very slow is that they use too much of your computer's memory, or RAM. So using an antivirus program that does not consume much memory is important. Avast Antivirus uses a relatively small amount of system memory, while at the same time providing a high level of security.

Another antivirus program that will not slow down your system when it is scanning your whole computer for viruses is Kaspersky. This is a top performer antivirus program that can perform scanning very quickly while doing a thorough job scanning. This does a fast, but complete, scan of your computer.
