The easiest way to do that will be to use the Safely Remove Hardware feature that is available in Windows 7/Vista.
It will take you just 2 clicks if you pin the icon to the notification area, and by doing that you can avoid lots of problems.
Another option will be to install a third part application the does the same thing.

Some people copy files on their flash discs that may contain information that they don't want other people to have. For example there might be financial reports of a company that was saved on the flash disc.
When the files are deleted they can still be recovered. So there are applications that erase the data off the flash disc that makes it impossible or anybody to recover the files from the drive.
An application that will erase the flash disk is Roadkil's Diskwipe
