LCD = Liquid crystal display

A type of display used in digital watches and many portable computers. LCD displays, utilize two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid crystal solution between them. An electric current passed through the liquid, causes the crystals to align so that light cannot pass through them. Each crystal, therefore, is like a shutter, either allowing light to pass through or blocking the light.

Monochrome LCD images usually appear as blue or dark gray images, on top of a grayish-white background. Color LCD displays use two basic techniques for producing color: Passive matrix is the less expensive of the two technologies. The other technology, called thin film transistor (TFT) or active-matrix, produces color images that are as sharp as traditional CRT displays, but the technology is expensive. Recent passive-matrix displays using new CSTN and DSTN technologies produce sharp colors rivalling active-matrix displays.

Most LCD screens used in notebook computers are backlit, or transmissive, to make them easier to read.

LED=LIGHT EMITTING DIODE

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for other lighting. Introduced as a practical electronic component in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.

When a light-emitting diode is forward biased (switched on), electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. An LED is often small in area (less than 1 mm2), and integrated optical components may be used to shape its radiation pattern.

LEDs present many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness, smaller size, faster switching, and greater durability and reliability. LEDs powerful enough for room lighting are relatively expensive and require more precise current and heat management than compact fluorescent lamp sources of comparable output.

Light-emitting diodes are used in applications as diverse as replacements, for aviation lighting, automotive lighting(particularly brake lamps, turn signals and indicators) as well as in traffic signals. The compact size, the possibility of narrow bandwidth, switching speed, and extreme reliability of LEDs has allowed new text and video displays and sensors to be developed, while their high switching rates are also useful in advanced communications technology.

Infrared LEDs are also used in the remote control units of many commercial products including televisions, DVD players, and other domestic appliances.

Hello,

Difference between LCD monitor and LED monitor is only on Back light.

LCD Monitor

LCD means Liquid Crystal Display Technology. It has two layers of glass together. The liquid crystal, help to block the light or allow the light to pass.

LED Monitor

LED means Light Emitting Diodes. It's a new technology. LED monitors consume less electricity than LCD. The main thing is that LED monitor will give you a better contrast ratio, viewing angle, perfect color. But it is very hard to find out the difference between LCD and LED monitor.

Both the monitors are good but LED is the better one, because of its new technology.

Basically there are two types of monitors nowadays namely, LED and LCD displays.

LED stands for, Light Emitting Diodes display and LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. Whenever a person goes to the shop and wants to purchase a new monitor, they are confused with both of these. So here below, are clear differences between the two.

LED TVs are basically gives a new look to the users. No doubt that LED TVs are little bit same as LCD TVs. but there are some of the features that are not present in the LCDs and because of those features LCDs are now given a new look in LED. So, their features are also different from each other.

  1. LED display has a faster response time when compared to LCD.
  2. LED has an advantage over LCD in color combination.
  3. LED display consume more power as compared to LCD.
  4. LCD display, not gives a good image as go wider, while LED don't posses these type of features. LED display have a capability to relate their views or picture as a plasma has.
  5. Sizes of LCD and LED also varies in a sense that their showing of image is different and LED is also available in a bigger size while LCDs are bit shorter than LEDs.
