This depends on what work shall you perform with the Laptop. If it is for simple purpose then the Laptop can be an ordinary one.
1. If you need to work on some specific software, then you need to check whether all the requirements of the software are met by the configuration of the PC you are buying for.
2. See whether you need hardware like a RAM of 160 MB. Then you must have a laptop with such configuration.

You want to buy a laptop you said. Actually the word laptop means something elaborate. You have to specify what you want to buy; Notebook or Netbook. Also what is your budget? For office work I think Netbook are better. These are small kind of laptop. It can be easily carried for their small size.
On the other hand Notebook are large with many functions included. In netbook sometimes it becomes difficult do some kind of office work. If you want to do programming or other kind of simulation job like ansys, you must buy a highly configured notebook. Otherwise buy a netbook. All the brand of market I prefer ASUS is the best among them.
