Full name of DNS is (Domain Name System ) a service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Actually Internet is based on IP addresses. It is difficult to memorize to so many IP address.

Suppose if you are told to memorize  72.14.207.99(www.google.com)you can memorize it easily. but if you are told to memorize 100s of ip address by their name.it impossible to memorize it. But we type easily https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl and browser takes us to that easily. In that part a DNS server resolves a name to an IP address. By the way, if you type "CMD" in the Run box on Windows XP, then "www.google.com". You can see what the IP address is for the website.please see the diagram.

i thik it will help you.

DNS  means Domain Name System which is the main purpose is to designate the domain names into packs of net users in proper way. Internet domain names are much simple to understand compare to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.  For example IP address translates from 205.88.188 to desired Internet name by the net user. The users take a lead once they deliver significant Uniform Resource Locators (URLs).  DNS delivers in right form when assigning domain names for pin-pointing names to IP addresses. It also keeps many types of information such as email   in an internet domain. Domain Name System is a must in today’s technology where it speed up the communication.
