I am a Linux system administrator. I will tell you how I become an expert.
First you have to be familiar with the Linux environment. Take a good understanding of the Linux folder structure, permission systems etc. I think it is better to use Centos or Debian totally through the terminal. Then read and gather basic knowledge of the system administration commonly and then learn about Linux system Administration.
Then there are lot of online tutorials and lot of examples and exercises that you can try . Go through some of this process with less notes but lot of practical work. To be an expert, that depends on you my friend. More exercises means expertise.
