Hi,

Your question is a little ambiguous. As far as I understood, you are trying to ask what are DMZs  and what is their role in a company. And may be you are asking why exchange servers are often placed in a DMZ.

Look, DMZ (De-militarized Zone) in computer networking means that we have a LAN or a segment of a LAN which is protected by a firewall.

Its an additional security measure to prevent a LAN or segment of a LAN from intruders.

Often we place Exchange Servers in DMZs because we need them to be extra secure. And often we enhance security by using some hosts (proxy servers) that are place outside the LAN but they are part of the DMZ to which that particular LAN belongs.

I hope this will help.
