A bridge device in networking basically sorts data traffic at a network boundary, and it minimizes the amount of traffic on a LAN by separating it into two segments. Bridging normally refers to transparent bridging or discovering bridge operation which prevails in Ethernet. A different type of bridging, source route bridging, was developed for token ring networks.

Bridges function at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model, and it scrutinizes any incoming traffic and chooses whether to forward or discard it. For instance, an Ethernet bridge examines every incoming Ethernet frame, as well as the source and destination MAC addresses.
