Yes, there are applications. But you will have to Google it in order to get a proper solution meeting with your required.
Also, there are some applications available in third party sites which you can try for free and certain settings of your device needs to be updated in order to use third party applications

I gotta agree with you, about Viber being lousy and all. But it was back when it was first released in beta. But as time goes by, updates are definitely making the app better. I can now recommend you to still try Viber out. There are however, a few other applications. Whatsapp, for one, can do whatever Viber can do. I suggest that you give it a try as well. Hope this helps!
