In my opinion I recommend you to go with the known YM clients that already exists for a specific operating system, because in general it will work out of the box. You can easily update it if new versions are released, install it and so on.Â
A best instant messaging (YM) is the tool that will fit your needs: chatting, voice or video calling, sharing files and so on (this depends on you).
For your operating system I recommend Empathy YM Client (https://packages.debian.org/sid/empathy). As a plus, using this client, you can take advantage of the multi protocol feature to use it with Facebook, Google, Yahoo and many others.
