I use Firefox for browsing and downloading video. I always use “Sothink Web Video Downloader for Firefox”. The file being downloaded using the application is ".flv". This kind of video file cannot be opened with Windows Media Player. It can be  opened in VLC or FLV Player. How can I open it with Windows Media Player?

You can open FLV files in Windows Media Player using the FLV Codec Plugin. The Play FLV codec gives your installation of Windows Media Player the ability to play FLV files by installing a codec.

Another way is to install ffdshow which is DirectShow filter and also VFW codec. Ffdshow supports so many audio and video formats and won't be a problem for you to see any of those on WMP. You will also need FLV Splitter.

After that right click on your FLV file and change default application to Windows Media Player. If you can’t find it on the list, click Browse. Select from the list and click OK.

Dear Jamespaul,

By default, Youtube downloads videos are in .flv format which opens with flash player. If you are using genuine windows and its original Windows Media Player, update its codec which supports .flv files. The other option you may have is to convert .flv file into .mp4. There are many converters available on internet. Download any good one. Convert the video and enjoy watching in Windows Media Player.

Give me a break we have other options too. Download file from youtube using realplayer 11. The downloaded file will run in windows media player too. Now you decide for which solution you are going.
