I want to know the Maximum PC, I can put up with Window7 same LAN. Thank you How many PCs can theoretically be installed on a Windows 7-Lan, assuming you had an infinite number of switches and cables. I think the answer is 100, but I'm not sure – it could be unlimited. All the experts tell me about this thing.

Dear Jon L Sturm,

The answer of your question is not as simple. It depends on many factors, important factors are

  1. Protocol used (IPv4 and IPv6)
  2. Device used for networking (hub, switch, bridge , router)
  3. Subnet mask

Theoratically A  IPv4 class C address (subnet mask 255.255.255.x) can support maximum  254 computers or nodes and class B address having  subnet mask (255.255.x.x) Can support 16381 nodes/computers maximum. But it is much lesser in practical situation. For example if you use Hub as a connecting device then you can use maximum 20 nodes / computers because all computers connected with hub have the same collision domain therefore if you use more that 20 nodes chances of collision will be greatly improved. Similarly if you use switch as a connecting device then there will be no issue of collision as each port of switch has its own collision domain hence there are no chances of collision but all ports of switch belongs to same broadcast domain i.e. Broadcast sent will be received by all the computers connected to switch. It means if we increase the number of computers there will be chances for broadcast storm which will eventually stop communication. Latest switches (especially cisco switches) has the capability to make VLAN which divides the broadcast domain in various sub domains hence decreases the chances for broadcast storm.

In short in practical consideration it is very hard to manage more than 50 computers on LAN, however a cisco or other trained expert can install and handle 100 nodes LAN easily.

Hello, How are you? In LAN connection there are 253 numbers of systems. The highest number in an IP address is 266. The last number and the first number of an IP (192.168.1.1) address is used for broadcast and network address respectively. Networks are configured in such a way that every PC gets his IP address from a DHCP server. The maximum number of nodes on a LAN depends on the media type, network protocol and the network address class. E.g. a class C IPv4 network to the Ethernet could have up to 254 nodes and for class B IPv4 network might have up to 16381 nodes. That is exactly it. Learn more.
